Variation in metal concentrations across a large contamination gradient is reflected in stream but not linked riparian food webs

چکیده
Aquatic insects link food web dynamics across freshwater-terrestrial boundaries and subsidize terrestrial consumer populations. Contaminants that accumulate in larval aquatic are retained metamorphosis can increase dietary exposure for riparian insectivores. To better understand potential of insectivores to aquatically-derived trace metals, metal concentrations water tissues were analyzed from different components streams webs a large (2–3 orders magnitude) gradient (e.g., Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb) the Rocky Mountains (USA). Our research indicates concentration present among was lost during into terrestrially flying adults, decoupling exposures concentrations. This pattern caused by declines 1) among-stream variation concentrations, 2) relationships between paired components, 3) mean within aquatic-terrestrial boundary. Specifically, highest vegetation, intermediate insect larvae (~30% lower than water) lowest adult spiders (~65% lower). Metal ranged highly related stream-metal (slopes ~1) less closer 0) vegetation larvae, unrelated ~0) insects. Finally, emerging (~50% vegetation). results indicate efficient trophic transfer higher metamorphic loss metals high (i.e., exposure-dependent transfer). For many is unlikely be an important source

Drivers of nitrogen transfer in stream food webs across continents.
Studies of trophic-level material and energy transfers are central to ecology. The use of isotopic tracers has now made it possible to measure trophic transfer efficiencies of important nutrients and to better understand how these materials move through food webs. We analyzed data from thirteen 15 N-ammonium tracer addition experiments to quantify N transfer from basal resources to animals in h...
متن کاملRiparian and in-stream controls on nutrient concentrations and fluxes in a headwater forested stream
Headwater streams are recipients of water sources draining through terrestrial ecosystems. At the same time, stream biota can transform and retain nutrients dissolved in stream water. Yet studies considering simultaneously these two sources of variation in stream nutrient chemistry are rare. To fill this gap of knowledge, we analyzed stream water and riparian groundwater concentrations and flux...
متن کاملBiotransport of Algal Toxins to Riparian Food Webs.
The occurrence of harmful algal blooms has resulted in growing worldwide concern about threats to aquatic life and human health. Microcystin (MC), a cyanotoxin, is the most widely reported algal toxin in freshwaters. Prior studies have documented its presence in aquatic food webs including commercially important fish and shellfish. In this paper we present the first evidence that algal toxins p...
متن کاملCCL22 16C/A Genetic Variation is not Associated with Breast Carcinoma in Southern Iranian Population
Background: CCL22/MDC is a CC chemokine with a critical role in regulation of the immune balance in physiological condition. CCL22/CCR-4 ligation has been documented to participate in the migration of regulatory T (Treg) cells and Th2 lymphocytes to the site of breast tumors; circumstances that are known to be associated with poor prognosis. Objective: To investigate the association of a single...
